Last week we began our Wednesday Diggers Members Garden feature and today we have some great pics and words from Peter of Melbourne. Peter says : “What started as a few tomatoes in pots has now become a passion for fresh and chemical free produce grown at home. I have 9 growing beds around the home and 12 fruit trees, everyday after work (sometimes before) I like to spend a ½ hr doing what needs doing or just observing the veggie patch. I find this a great way to unwind and helps to stay on top of jobs around it. I ‘m usually joined by my 2 daughters Thushari (7) and Bethany (3) who love to help out or watch the bugs doing their thing or it could be the handfuls of Strawberries, Cherry Tomatoes, Sugar Snap Peas and Broccoli they get as we harvest for breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Before each seasons plantings begin I sit down with my wife and we work out what we want from the patch, be it veggies, fruit or herbs. The best thing I have learned when it comes to growing is get your soil right and look after it. I compost religiously, I collect all the ingredients from around the garden. I have 3 black compost bins that I store all my green composting ingredients in then I collect the brown compost layers. I have a 3 bay composting set up I built out of old packing pallets that I use to mix both of them together and once I have a nice rich soil I add it to the veggie patch. I let Borage and Nasturtiums self sow all over, only moving them when I need room for growing veggies. These flowers along with my Lavender and Marigolds keep the bees coming in, I mix herbs all over as well. I love the idea and practice of Companion Planting and I am learning through trial and error as I go. Where once I loved just seeing rows of Tomatoes, Onions, Basil, Oregano and Marigolds. So much to learn and enjoy – Gotta love it!” We’ve put some more of Peter’s pics on a new board we’ve started on Pinterest, which you can see at: bit.ly/VEgsIf P.S.
