Last year, I saw a couple of films which were just plain awesome and both of them were in Marathi. The first was Abhijit Panses REGE. Though REGE was slightly elementary in craft and the non-linear structure put off quite a few friends I recommended the film to, it was one of the best cop-gangster film I have seen in recent years. More importantly, it proved how a kickass climax can make a film jump multiple levels in terms of impression :) The second was Manjules FANDRY. FANDRY weaves a tender and entertaining love story within the caste politics of a village. It is definitely one of the best films I have seen ever. If you havent seen these two last year, now is a good time to start the year with. Add to that ... KILLA and COURT ... two films I have heard great things about and will release in 2015. Clearly the lack of a star system has liberated the Marathi film industry from the clutches of what the Distributor and the Actor thinks will sell and you have more stories rooted in the milieu of this country. It is probably the only film industry in India which largely considers films a Directors medium. More power to that thought :) https://youtube/watch?v=BjHsL-_KG30
