Left us on this day (Jan. 6) in 1993: gifted jazz improviser, composer, bandleader & trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie (pancreatic cancer, age 75), one of the genres biggest names; over a career that spanned nearly 60 years, he drew the blueprint for future jazz trumpeters to follow, directly influencing the likes of Miles Davis, Arturo Sandoval & Fats Navarro; when be-bop first made the scene, it was Dizzy who embraced it & brought it to the masses, supported by his scat singing, signature bent horn, pouched cheeks & light-hearted personality; songs like A Night in Tunisia & Groovin were considered outlandish at the time but have since come to represent the greatness of jazzs first modern style; Dizzy stayed very active right up to his final years - in 1989, he performed an astonishing 300 shows all around the world; Dizzy was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2014…
