Left us on this day (July 7) in 2011: Cuban guitarist/arranger Manuel Galban (heart attack, age 80), best remembered internationally for his work with Ry Cooder & the successful Latin collective, Buena Vista Social Club; he was originally a member of popular Latin groups Las Zafiros & Grupo Batey, reaching a worldwide audience with Buena Vista Social Club via Wim Wenders acclaimed documentary of the same name; with Ry Cooder, he released Mambo Sinuendo in 2001 which earned the pair a 2003 Grammy award for for Best Pop Instrumental Album; Manuels distinctive electric guitar sound made liberal use of reverb, tremolo, diminished arpeggio runs & palm mutes; using a Fender Telecaster with heavy gauge strings, he referenced elements ranging from American surf music to the melodic runs & chordal patterns associated with traditional Cuban music…
