Leonard Cohen, hes my man! So Uncut magazine has voted Leonard Cohens Popular Problems number two, in its best of the year chart. Big deal I hear you say, charts are for tarts and opinions are like Clint said they were, but this is a sociological event of SOME magnitude. Firstly, it is a fitting testament to Mr Cohens enduring talent and all-round wonderfulness, that he can be the recipient of such an accolade, at the age of 80, but possibly more important, is that it shows how the devolution of the music industry is a giant leap forwards, despite the wailings of a few Luddites, who bemoan the slaying of their golden goose. Ok so Lenny is signed to one of the few remaining record companies and has therefore received a bit more promotion than the average octogenarian would get but nonetheless, his prominence is proof positive that the facile notion, that nobody over forty makes relevant music, is dying with the industry that created it. The internet-driven, D-I-Y age of music is upon us and it affords the opportunity for artistes of any age and any genre, to put their work out there and have it evaluated on its merits, not on its wrongly perceived market-potential, or whether its fashionable.
