Liverpool manager, Brendan Rodgers has signed a new long-term contract with the Premier League club, a reward for reviving the fortunes of one of England’s biggest teams. Liverpool finished second in the league standings, two points behind Manchester City, following an unexpected challenge for the title, and also secured a return to the Champions League. Manchester United coach Louis van Gaal has dismissed Cesc Fabregas and Toni Kroos from the clubs list of targets for this summer. The Dutchman has, however, been linked with Bayern Munich talisman Bastian Schweinsteiger and the word out of Munich is that Pep Guardiola would be willing to listen to offers of £10million for the 29-year-old midfielder. Schweinsteiger, whose name cropped up during David Moyess tenure at United, is also interested in a new challenge. The old regime had concerns about his fitness and value for money, given that he earns £8m a year but Van Gaal worked with the Germany star at Bayern nnd knows him better than most. Also in Van Gaals thinking is the Dutch contingent of Feyenoord right back Daryl Janmaat, centre back Bruno Martins Indi and the versatile Ajax defender Daley Blind. A deal for Romas Kevin Strootman remains on the cards once he proves he is recovering well from his knee ligament injury. Meanwhile, Danny Welbeck has admitted to becoming frustrated by his failure to hold down a first-team place up front for United. The England forward wants a central role for club and country to prove he can score goals regularly at the highest level. Tom Ince is relishing the prospect of following in his fathers footsteps by playing for Inter Milan next season. The 22-year-old winger and his father, Paul, arrived in Milan yesterday to discuss a possible move to the club. Ince is out of contract at Blackpool this summer and a transfer abroad would earn the Championship side just £155,000 in compensation. Ince joined Premier League Crystal Palace on loan last season, just days after his father was sacked as manager of Blackpool. Colombia will wait until the last minute to decide whether to pick recuperating striker Radamel Falcao in their final World Cup squad. Falcao, 28, is recovering from surgery after damaging knee ligaments while playing for Monaco in a French Cup tie in January. He is still in Monaco while the national squad are in Argentina. In preparation for Colombias first finals appearance since 1998 they play Senegal on 31 May and Jordan on 6 June. Pekerman must name his final 23-man squad by 2 June with the World Cup starting 10 days later with Colombia facing Greece, Ivory Coast and Japan in Group C. Cranes captain, Andy Mwesigwa, has failed to secure permission to join the national team early enough ahead of the Madagascar return leg game on saturday. The skipper will join his fellow Cranes camp on Thursday, before proceeding to the field for training the next day. Andy Mwesigwa said: “I have tried everything to see that I come early enough but at the same time I must protect my job. According to my bosses, I must wait till we finish the game scheduled for May 28.” Mwesigwa plays for Ordabasy FC in Kazakhstan top flight league. Meanwhile, the Cranes camp was boosted by the arrival of South Africa based goalkeeper Denis Onyango who plays for Mamerod sundown. Onyango reported on Thursday and fully involved in the training. He was further joined by other players the coach had dropped on the Madagascar visit. Moses Oloya and Tony Mawejje who play from Vietnam and Norway respectively, will also join the team.
