MAN Oron, Chevron Collaborate To Train Cadets Abroad Two hundred and fifty cadets of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, are to commence the mandatory one year sea time training abroad soon. Out of this number, one hundred and fifty cadets are for marine engineering while one hundred are for Nautical Science. The federal Government is to spend Nine million Naira on each of the cadets during the training. The Rector, Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, Mr. Joshua Okpo, stated this recently, during an interaction with Newsmen in the Academy. The Rector explained that the essence of the training is to ensure that products of the Academy meet the global requirements for engagement in the Maritime industry. Mr. Okpo said efforts were at advanced level to upgrade the Academy to a degree awarding Institution, having secured affiliation with World Maritime Academy in Sweden through recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The Academy Chief Executive noted that, courses in the institution have been accredited by the National Board for Technical Education while the syllabus was being upgraded in tandem with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Standards. He disclosed that fifty one lecturers have also been employed between August last year and January this year while facilities were being put in place to meet new challenges. He further said that the Institution has taken disciplinary action against some lecturers and cadets who were involved in sharp practices, stating that the Academy would not hesitate to expel any student or lecturer found wanting. Mr. Okpo described the Maritime Academy as a National Asset which should not be allowed to drift and appealed for cooperation from all stakeholders, including the Media, in order to achieve set goals. He assured of continuous transparency in the affairs of the Academy through due process in order to fulfill his mandate to the benefit of mankind and to the glory of God. The rector acknowledged supports from the State Governor, Chief Godswill Akpabio and Oron Local Government Council among others in his quest to reposition the academy on the path of growth and encouraged people to always make enquiries on issues pertaining to the Institution rather than making flippant, unguarded and unsubstantiated comments aimed at smearing the image of the academy. The State Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Elder Patrick Albert acknowledged with satisfaction the positive impact made by the Joshua Okpo-led administration in the Academy and commended him for being able to resolve the discord among the host communities. He highlighted some activities of the NUJ which required support from the Academy and pledged the readiness of the Union to partner the Rector in his effort to sanitize the Institution. The Media consultant to the Academy, Elder Edet Okpo, Deputy Registrar, Information and Head, Public Relations, Mr. Siddi Mkpandiok and others who spoke also commended the Head of the Institution for repositioning the Academy for greatness and made inputs in areas of concern. In a related development, the management of Chevron, a multi-national oil company in the country has indicated interest to partner the academy in placing atleast 10 cadets on Compulsory Sea Time through quality training with international crew and also employ them permanently in the company, as part of their corporate social responsibilities. Addressing the Management team of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron this Wednesday, Mr. Angelo Morello – Chevron Marine Superintendent in charge of Marine Operations, informed them that Chevron has genuine intention of developing maritime workforce through training of its cadets to meet international best standards. Mr. Morello who described the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron as a Centre of Excellence in Maritime Education disclosed that the training would produce certificate of competency (COC) for the cadets and make them marketable in the global market. The Marine superintendent commended the management of the academy for maintaining high academic standard and for during out sound and highly disciplined cadets who are currently working with Chevron as full time staff. He prevailed on the Management of the academy to forward names of benefiting cadets to Chevron before the end of August, 2014. Responding, the Rector, Joshua Okpo while welcoming the Chevrons team to the academy described their visit as apt and timely, as academy was intensifying efforts to train 250 cadets abroad for mandatory sea time. The rector assured Chevron of managements readiness to release well behaved, cultured and disciplined cadets for the training, even as he promised to protect the business interest of Chevron. Mr. Okpo expressed gratitude to the Management of Chevron for always engaging products of the academy during their employment.
