Blues, Soul & Very Funky Grooves with The Mighty Reapers. “Continental” Robert Susz: Vocals, Harmonica; Dave Brewer: Guitar, Vocals; Vito Portolesi: Bass; Antero Ceschin: Drums; Clayton Doley: Hammond Organ. In January of 2013 the Mighty Reapers played their first Sydney show in two and a half years with a sellout show at the Cat & Fiddle, Balmain. Reapers fans from all over Sydney came out of the woodwork to revisit one of this city’s most loved blues and soul combos. The band followed this up with another huge show at the Petersham Bowling Club in January of this year, plus a special bonus show in August. The great news is that the Reapers are back at Petersham Bowlo on Friday 2nd January 2015. Once again guitarist Dave Brewer has flown in especially from his home in Perth, whilst the globetrotting Clayton Doley will also be rejoining the classic Reapers crew. The Reapers rose from the ashes of the Dynamic Hepnotics in 1986 with “Continental” Robert Susz joining forces with guitarist Dave Brewer to form the very popular blues and soul outfit, recording a number of highly acclaimed albums, released here and in the USA, and playing behind artists such as Margie Evans, Big Jay McNeely, Lucky Petersen and Bobby Radcliff - to name just a few. youtube/watch?v=md-utzsGIr0 TUESDAY 20 JAN @ PETERSHAM BOWLO: DAVID FRANCEY (Canada). 8PM. Tickets: $28 (advance) or $30 (door). Advance bookings: trybooking/115421 Petersham Bowling Club, 77 Brighton St, Petersham. Ph. 9569 4639. thepbc.org.au/ David Francey is a Scottish-born Canadian carpenter-turned-songwriter, who has become known as “one of Canada’s most revered folk poets and singers” (Toronto Star). Born in Ayrshire, Scotland to parents who were factory workers, he moved to Canada when he was twelve. For decades, he worked across Canada in rail yards, construction sites, and in the Yukon bush, all the while writing poetry, setting it to melodies in his head and singing it to himself as he worked. A truly authentic folk singer, Francey is a documentarian of the working person who never imagined earning a living from his music. But when he was in his 40s, his wife, artist Beth Girdler, encouraged him to share his songs and sing in public. The reaction was instant. His first album Torn Screen Door came out in 1999 and was a hit in Canada. Since then, he has released ten albums, won three Juno Awards and has had his songs covered by such artists as The Del McCoury Band, The Rankin Family, James Keelaghan, Kieran Kane, etc. Francey has demonstrated the kind of consistency as a songwriter that makes even other songwriters shake their head in disbelief. On his latest album, So Say We All, he shares yet another collection of so-good-they-could-be-traditional numbers marked by the perfectly-stated poetry and stick-in-your-head melodies of the enduring folk song. David will be accompanied by fellow-Canadians, Mark Westberg (guitar, percussion, & harmony vocals), and Chris Coole (banjo, guitar, & dobro). Chris Coole is regarded as one of the finest exponents of the clawhammer style of banjo-playing in North America. davidfrancey/ Video: “Lucky Man”: https://youtube/watch?v=EDTotM7OIaE WEDNESDAY 21 JAN @ THE CAT & FIDDLE: TIM EDEY TRIO (UK). 8PM. $25. The genius of Tim Edey has taken festivals and audiences by storm across Europe and North America over the last five years. Born in Kent, of Irish descent, Tim is a brilliant guitarist and button accordion player who played on a recent Chieftains European tour, and was awarded BBC Radio Two’s Musician of the year 2012. He has toured the world and recorded with most of the major names in Celtic/ Contemporary roots music including; Christy Moore, Sharon Shannon, Natalie MacMaster, Altan, Capercaillie, Brendan Power, Michael McGoldrick, Seamus Begley, Dougie Maclean, Mary Black, to name a few. His virtuosity is undeniable, Colin Irwin of fRoots magazine described him as “ brilliant - in every which way. As a guitarist he has few peers. As a box player he’s a magician. As a character he’s off the scale”. Tim is joined in his trio by Isobel Crowe on vocals and Ben Trott on vocals and guitar. timedey.co.uk/ SATURDAY 31 JAN @ THE ROXBURY: BLACK MARKET TUNE (Austria/Scotland) + Rapt. 8PM. $25. Bookings: trybooking/114777 Or tickets at the door. Roxbury Hotel. 182 St Johns Rd, Glebe. Ph. 9692 0822 Austrian quartet, Black Market Tune, is a successful example of outstanding musicians networking across Europe, and the globalisation of Celtic folk music. The band is made up of three Austrians, Paul Dangl (fiddle, vocals), Christian Troger (mandolin, guitar), and Mira Lu Kovacs (vocals, guitar), together with John Somerville, from Scotland, on piano accordion. They play modern folk music with a Scottish backbone - your feet wont stand still when it comes to their driving Austro-Caledonian tune-sets, while their enchanting songs invite you to delve into folk tales about love, whiskey and emigration. The group brings together strands of Celtic, American and European folk, weaving them into a sometimes subtle, sometimes powerful, musical tapestry. blackmarkettune/ Songwriting Societies and groups Songwriting Society of Australia Workshop and Professional Development Your Workshop and Professional Development session is waiting for you on the last Sunday of each month @ Mars Hill Café @ Songwriting Sunday. APRA LIVE PERFORMANCE RETURNS - MONEY FOR YOU! On Tuesday 19th August, I sent out the list of everybodys gigs (according to my records) from 1 July 2013-30 June 2014 so you can prepare your APRA Live Performance Returns. If you did not receive an email with your details, please let me know! Note: I make no guarantee that what I send you will be 100% correct, so you will need to check it against your own records (get back to me if you find any discrepancies). I included instructions on how to enter the information - one person has already told me it looks complicated - but it will all make sense once you open the APRA web site apra-amcos.au, and it is worth the effort because you will get PAID for performing your songs (that person will make over$200). You just need to: 1. Join APRA now at apra-amcos.au, if you are not already a member (it’s FREE), and register your songs 2. Log on to apra-amcos.au and enter the performances I send you (plus any others you have done) 3. Enter how many times you have performed each song over the year. They should have sent you a cheque in November! If you have any problem entering these details contact Writer Services: [email protected] or phone them on the local number for your state listed on their web site. I don’t work for APRA so DO NOT CONTACT ME about how their web site works. TIP (THOUGHTS) OF THE WEEK Thought for the Day, “Love is friendship set to music.” ― Jackson Pollock Thought for the Day, “Music is poetry with personality,” ― Ross Lynch Does that mean Love is friendship set to poetry with personality? These thoughts (well, not the last one) were borrowed from my brother, Terrys Facebook page https://facebook/pages/Blue-Taboo/641797352530240 - listen to Blue Taboos wonderful music! (thats MY tip) They were recently #1 in the Reverbnation Jazz charts for Sydney - reverbnation/bluetaboo This might be of interest: chn.ge/1skFGa8 a petition to Commit to an Australian Music Museum - its a great idea, though personally Id prefer money to go to supporting young and unknown musicians. Maybe thats where the profits from such a museum should go! Please feel free to send in your tips, practical ones or motivational ones, funny ones, whatever you think will finish the newsletter on a good note!!
