Our video starts with the dose of double trouble you will find North of the Bridge on September 27 when the Sault Ste. Marie Marathon and the Samuel Adams Mighty Mac Bridge Run are held. Our cameras will be there to bring you all the action and some views of fall weather. We then introduce you to a new race, the Mt. Bohemia Trail Running Festiva in Houghton, on October 4th and 5th. There will be a 5K and 10K on Saturday and a half marathon on Sunday. Next, Gary Morgan talks with Jeff Crumbaugh of Great Lakes Endurance about his Upper Peninsula trail runs. Finally, we introduce you to the Bay de Noc Home Run in Escanaba, where storied Upper Peninsula runner Tracy Lokken trashed the field and picked up some cash for his efforts. Bobbie Stacy, the Home Run race director, said participation was up, most likely because the cash rewards had returned. Baldhead Challenge seeks Runners, Volunteers ========================================= Mt. Baldhead Challenge News Release: Runners, walkers and nature buffs are invited to sign up for one of Michigan’s “most interesting races,” the Mt. Baldhead Challenge in Saugatuck-Douglas—recently voted USA Today’s No. 1 Weekend Escape in the U.S.—Saturday, Sept. 6. “Where else can you climb 283 steps up a giant sand dune midway through a 15K run?” asked Michigan Runner magazine in recognizing the benefit road and trail race 12 years ago. “If that doesn’t take your breath, the view will,” it said. The steps, which have since been rebuilt, now number 302. The course has added loops through the wooded Ox-Bow Art School and Oval Beach on Lake Michigan, making it more memorable yet. The cause is great too. Both the Challenge’s 5K and 15K races raise funds for the Saugatuck High School Interact Club, which this summer sent four students to the Dominican Republic to install bio-sand filters, providing clean water for needy families. “This is a one-of-a-kind event,” said Scott Sullivan, one of three race directors from the Saugatuck-Douglas Rotary Club, in its third year of sponsoring the Challenge. Joining him are Jack Sheridan and Chris Yoder. “The more we explore the course, the more amazed we are by its beauty,” Sullivan continued. “There is no other race quite like this.” Both courses feature new routes this year, adding mileage on picturesque Lakeshore Drive overlooking Lake Michigan and eliminating former finishing loops in Douglas. Instead, the end will be near on re-entering downtown Douglas—but first runners must traverse a lakeside boardwalk, the dreaded 14 “Baby Steps” (288 fewer than up Mt. Baldhead, but each counts for more) and passing through a “wildlife trail section” including turns around a large frog and mini-buffalo. Not for the faint of heart! The Challenge, in its 15th year, will start and end at Beery Field on the corner of Center and Main streets in downtown Douglas. It includes a free “Little Feet, Big Feat” children’s fun run there during packet pickups Friday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m., followed by Saturday’s 15K (9.3-mile) title race at 8 a.m. and a 5K (3.1-mile) race 15 minutes later. Entry fees of $30 for the 15K and $25 for the 5K through Sept. 4, then $35 and $30 respectively up to race time, entitle entrants to custom t-shirts, on-course aid stations and support, limited-edition James Brandess art for top men and women overall and masters winners, age-group medals, post-race food and drinks, plus more. The race also seeks volunteers. “Rotary’s motto is, ‘Service above self,”’ said Sullivan. “Your time commitment will be small compared to the impact you will have on making the race more enjoyable for the participants, other volunteers and the community. “Most important, we want you to have fun!” he said. To sign up or for more information about the Mt. Baldhead Challenge, visit mtbaldheadchallenge or call Sullivan at (269) 857-2570. ================================================== Heritage Hustle on August 16 in Ypsilanti Has Been Cancelled ================================================== From the Heritage Hustle Website: Due to circumstances beyond our control, the Heritage Hustle 5k has been canceled. We are very disappointed to have to cancel this new downtown event, and hope to hold a similar race in the future. Refunds will be issued as soon as possible to those who have already signed up. Here is the Class of 2014. John Jerome submitted this information: Gardell Haralson: This will be Gardell Haralson’s 30th Crim 10 Mile Road Race. Gardell’s first Crim was in 1979 and his fastest time was 1:24, his slowest was 1:48. Those are very consistent time over 30 years. Gardell has run 22 Crim’s in a row. In 2009 Gardell drove up from Memphis TN and arrived in Flint the night before the race. That year Gardell was “sleep running”. In addition to his running Gardell is a full time Musician, DJ, Singer, Drummer Keyboards and Hustle and Ballroom Dance instructor. Gardell would like to give a shout-out to his son’s Boss Dell, Gerrell, Man, lil girl, Shardell, the Gardell’s Hustle Aerobic Seniors Class and Hasselbring Hustlers. Gardell’s goal now is to complete 30 more Crim’s. Larry Morse Larry Morse lives in Marquette MI is making the 390 mile drive to Flint to run the Crim 10 Mile race. While running his own business it was hard to find time to train, but Larry was able to train so well in 1983 that he ran the Crim in 59:52. Over the years Larry has been impressed with how the Crim has grown and how it has helped Special Olympics. Larry’s first Crim was in 1979. Larry got started in running by his many friends that were runners. One year Larry met Jerry (Sticks) Traylor and was inspired by the great attitude that Sticks has. Sal Vela Sal Vela of Newport, MI ran his first Crim in 1978 to raise funds for Special Olympics. Sal is retired and missed 4 years in a row while working for GM in Mexico. When asked what is most rewarding about reaching 30 Crim’s, Sal said “Seeing the Crim become a family event in our family. Seeing my children, grand-children and family friends run the Crim race”. One year while going up the first Bradley Hill, close to the top a lady behind Sal said “I can’t make it, someone help me”. Sal reached back and took her hand and helped her get to the top. Sal missed reaching 30 Crim’s in 2013 due to an injury. We are all hoping Sal makes 30 Crim’s in 2014. Frank Hagelshaw Frank Hagelshaw completed his first Crim in 1981, has completed over 20 Crims in a row, and will run his 30th in 2014. Frank finds it a challenge to stay in good condition and remain healthy enough to complete the Crim. (Editor’s Note: This is a challenge many of us are faced with.) Frank is retired and enjoys the atmosphere of race morning stepping onto Saginaw St. and that sense of pride at the finish line. Frank lives in East Jordan, MI and travels about 200 miles to attend the Crim. Frank had been running about a year before running his first Crim. Prior to that the most he had run was a 10K. Franks goal for 2014 is to finish strong and feel that pride of crossing the finish line. Roxanne McFall On Friday night before the Crim you can find Roxanne McFall in Downtown Flint watching the Special Olympians on Saginaw St. Then on Saturday while running the 10 mile course if Roxanne gets tired, she just remembers the Special Olympians on Friday night and it gives her an extra boost of energy. On Aug.2 2000, Roxanne’s dad went into the hospital. On Aug. 19, he passed away. After spending 17 days in the hospital, she did not train, eat, or sleep much, but still found the strength to complete the 10 miles, because she knew her dad would have wanted her to finish. Roxanne was inspired to do her first Crim by a coworker telling her that her husband was training their 10-year-old daughter to run the Crim. Roxanne felt that if a 10 -year-old could do it so could she. This will be Roxanne’s 30th consecutive 10 mile crim. Her fastest time was 96 minutes. Her husband, Louis, will be running his 28th Crim. Daughters Melissa and Angi, grandchildren Andrew , Makena, Kyle and Hanna have done many Crim events. This year they all plan on running the 10 mile to celebrate Roxanne’s 30th Crim. Mary Ann Isaacson Mary Ann has run 26 Crim’s in a row; she missed 1987 due to cancer. She came back strong in 1991 and ran her fastest Crim, 85:35. In 2001, the day before the Crim she slammed her left foot into a chaise lounge and fractured three toes. Mary Ann wrapped up her toes, laced up her shoes and completed the 10 miles in 98:08. Mary Ann retired from EDS in 1996, and then retired from Macy’s in 2011. In 2007 Mary Ann decided to join the Crim Training Program. Mary Ann had won 2nd and 3rd Place awards in her age group but in 2007 she won her only 1st Place Crim Age Group award. This year Mary Ann plans to run the Crim one second faster than last year. Robert Ransom Who has been a member of the Crim Board of Directors for 23 years, group leader in the Crim Training program for 18 years and performed the marriage ceremony for Brian and Dorie Barkey. Robert is a retired Circuit Judge and was also instrumental in starting the Training program for 10 mile walkers. Robert’s goal for 2014 is to finish the 10 miles. 2013 was a challenging year for Robert with injuries but he still took the time to help an injured walker finish last year’s race. One year Robert and Brian Barkey helped a mom complete the 10 miles. She was doing the Crim as a memorial to her son who had passed away from Cancer. Jim Lawson Jim Lawson lives in Clarkston and started running the Crim in 1981. He has completed as many as 15 in a row with his best time being 62:55 in 1985. Jim has found it most challenging to avoid injuries while reaching the 30 Crim milestone. Jim has completed 49 marathons and ran one 50 miler. Jim also plans to run another 10 or 15 Crim’s. In 2008 Jim was on his last long run before the Crim. Two miles into the run felt something “pop” in his left ankle. He ruptured a tendon. (Posterior tibial tendon) While most of us were running the Crim in 2008, Jim was having an MRI done. Three orthopedic surgeons told Jim he needed reconstructive surgery and would not run again. The fourth told Jim he could fix it and he would be able to run marathons again. Wayne Patterson Wayne Patterson lives in Attica (about 28 miles from Flint) and is a retired engineer for Delphi. Wayne’s first Crim was in 1981 and his fastest Crim was 74:32 in 1982. Wayne has found running the Crim each year helps to keep him healthy and keep his weight down. (Which has becomes more difficult as the years past.) According to Wayne, it is encouraging to see the young runners. It amazed me when women runners passed me up (in my prime). Wayne uses the Crim as a measuring stick to see how well he has been able to keep himself healthy from year to year. He was extra challenged one year when his car broke down at Center Rd and I-69 on his way to the race. Wayne did a run/walk to the starting line, but made it in time. Marilyn Brown Marilyn Brown is a retired school teacher and ran her first Crim in 1980. She has completed 23 Crim’s in a row, with her fastest Crim being 81:12, so far. Marilyn finds it very rewarding to be able to join the Crim 30 Year Club and to be able to start up front. Marilyn has worked as a volunteer for the Crim, working in the office and at packet pickup. Marilyn’s most challenging Crim was in 2013. She had foot surgery and was not able to train as well as she would have liked. Friends got Marilyn starting in running and she plan to run a better time this year than last year. =============================== Great Performances - Track and Field =============================== -- Commonwealth Games, Glasgow, England, July 27 - August 2 3rd - 1500) -- Nick Willis, 3:39.60 ============================= Michigan Runner Race Series, 2014 ============================= Corktown Races, 5K, Detroit - March 16 Striders Saturday Classic, 10 Mile, Grandville - April 19 Burns Park Run 10K, Ann Arbor - May 4 Fifth Third River Bank Run 25K, Grand Rapids - May 10 Dexter Ann Arbor Half Marathon, Ann Arbor - June 1 Brian Diemer Family of Races 5K, Cutlerville - June 14 Volkslaufe 20K, Frankenmuth - July 4 Cherry Festival 15K, Traverse City - July 12 Crim Festival of Races, 10 Mile, Flint - August 23 Mackinac Island Road Race, 8 Mile, Mackinac Island - Sept. 6 Sault International Marathon, Sault Ste.
