MONDAY, January 26 The Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle (tr) Acts 26:13 I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining around me and my companions. I would write about my own conversion, but it seems so far away. Not only does it appear distant, like looking through the telescope the wrong way, but I no longer experience the powerful events that surrounded it, strong emotions, visions during daily meditation, and unexpected delicious scents. Yes, I had a conversion that changed my life, that reduced me to tears on this feast day ten years ago, but now after the initial rush, the new life often seems ordinary, routine, labored. Something tells me this is the way it’s supposed to be, that it’s okay to go up the mountain, but you can’t stay there. You have to come down eventually and walk the flat lands. That’s where the real, and yes, the hard, work takes place. There is no doubt in my mind that this new life is infinitely better than what might have been had I not responded to the call of the Spirit. All it takes on the flat days is a kind, affirming word or gesture from one of those we serve. I experience gratitude and am converted all over again. PRAY for the Diocese of Los Angeles (Province VIII, The Episcopal Church) Today the Church remembers The Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle. Ps 67; Acts 26:9-21; Galatians 1:11-24; Matthew 10:16-22
