MORNING PRAYER Lent Monday, 17 March 2014 Patrick, Bishop, Missionary, Patron of Ireland, c.460 [Lesser Festival] Preparation In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen! O Lord, open our lips and our mouth shall proclaim your praise. Hear our voice, O Lord, according to your faithful love, according to your judgement give us life. One or more of the following is said or sung: this or another prayer of thanksgiving Blessed are you, God of compassion and mercy, to you be praise and glory for ever. In the darkness of our sin, your light breaks forth like the dawn and your healing springs up for deliverance. As we rejoice in the gift of your saving help, sustain us with your bountiful Spirit and open our lips to sing your praise. Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God for ever. a suitable hymn, or A Song of Penitence Have mercy on me, O God, in your great goodness; • according to the abundance of your compassion blot out my offences. Wash me thoroughly from my wickedness • and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my faults • and my sin is ever before me. Against you only have I sinned • and done what is evil in your sight, So that you are justified in your sentence • and righteous in your judgement. Cast me not away from your presence • and take not your holy spirit from me. Give me again the joy of your salvation • and sustain me with your gracious spirit; Then shall I teach your ways to the wicked • and sinners shall return to you. Deliver me from my guilt, O God, the God of my salvation, • and my tongue shall sing of your righteousness. This opening prayer may be said The night has passed, and the day lies open before us; let us pray with one heart and mind. Silence is kept. As we rejoice in the gift of this new day, so may the light of your presence, O God, set our hearts on fire with love for you; now and for ever. Amen. The Word of God Psalmody The appointed psalmody is said. Psalm 26 Lord, I love the place where your glory abides. Give judgement for me, O Lord, for I have walked with integrity; • I have trusted in the Lord and have not faltered. Test me, O Lord, and try me; • examine my heart and my mind. For your love is before my eyes; • I have walked in your truth. I have not joined the company of the false, • nor consorted with the deceitful. R I hate the gathering of evildoers • and I will not sit down with the wicked. Lord, I love the place where your glory abides. Have mercy on us and redeem us, O Lord, for our merits are your mercies and in your judgement is our salvation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Psalm 32 Be glad, you righteous, and rejoice in the Lord. Happy the one whose transgression is forgiven, • and whose sin is covered. Happy the one to whom the Lord imputes no guilt, • and in whose spirit there is no guile. For I held my tongue; • my bones wasted away through my groaning all the day long. Your hand was heavy upon me day and night; • my moisture was dried up like the drought in summer. R Then I acknowledged my sin to you • and my iniquity I did not hide. I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,’ • and you forgave the guilt of my sin. Therefore let all the faithful make their prayers to you in time of trouble; • in the great water flood, it shall not reach them. You are a place for me to hide in; you preserve me from trouble; • you surround me with songs of deliverance. R ‘I will instruct you and teach you in the way that you should go; • I will guide you with my eye. ‘Be not like horse and mule which have no understanding; • whose mouths must be held with bit and bridle, or else they will not stay near you.’ Great tribulations remain for the wicked, • but mercy embraces those who trust in the Lord. Be glad, you righteous, and rejoice in the Lord; • shout for joy, all who are true of heart. Be glad, you righteous, and rejoice in the Lord. Give us honest hearts, O God, and send your kindly Spirit to help us confess our sins and bring us the peace of your forgiveness; in Jesus Christ our Lord. Each psalm or group of psalms may end with Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. Genesis 43.16-end When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, ‘Bring the men into the house, and slaughter an animal and make ready, for the men are to dine with me at noon.’ The man did as Joseph said, and brought the men to Joseph’s house. Now the men were afraid because they were brought to Joseph’s house, and they said, ‘It is because of the money, replaced in our sacks the first time, that we have been brought in, so that he may have an opportunity to fall upon us, to make slaves of us and take our donkeys.’ So they went up to the steward of Joseph’s house and spoke with him at the entrance to the house. They said, ‘Oh, my lord, we came down the first time to buy food; and when we came to the lodging-place we opened our sacks, and there was each one’s money in the top of his sack, our money in full weight. So we have brought it back with us. Moreover, we have brought down with us additional money to buy food. We do not know who put our money in our sacks.’ He replied, ‘Rest assured, do not be afraid; your God and the God of your father must have put treasure in your sacks for you; I received your money.’ Then he brought Simeon out to them. When the steward had brought the men into Joseph’s house, and given them water, and they had washed their feet, and when he had given their donkeys fodder, they made the present ready for Joseph’s coming at noon, for they had heard that they would dine there. When Joseph came home, they brought him the present that they had carried into the house, and bowed to the ground before him. He inquired about their welfare, and said, ‘Is your father well, the old man of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?’ They said, ‘Your servant our father is well; he is still alive.’ And they bowed their heads and did obeisance. Then he looked up and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, and said, ‘Is this your youngest brother, of whom you spoke to me? God be gracious to you, my son!’ With that, Joseph hurried out, because he was overcome with affection for his brother, and he was about to weep. So he went into a private room and wept there. Then he washed his face and came out; and controlling himself he said, ‘Serve the meal.’ They served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because the Egyptians could not eat with the Hebrews, for that is an abomination to the Egyptians. When they were seated before him, the firstborn according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth, the men looked at one another in amazement. Portions were taken to them from Joseph’s table, but Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as any of theirs. So they drank and were merry with him. Canticle The Song of Manasseh, or another suitable canticle, for example, number 20 (page 570), number 33 (page 584) or number 41 (page 592), may be said Refrain: Full of compassion and mercy and love is God, the Most High, the Almighty. Lord almighty and God of our ancestors, • you who made heaven and earth in all their glory: All things tremble with awe at your presence, • before your great and mighty power. Immeasurable and unsearchable is your promised mercy, • for you are God, Most High. You are full of compassion, long-suffering and very merciful, • and you relent at human suffering. O God, according to your great goodness, • you have promised forgiveness for repentance to those who have sinned against you. The sins I have committed against you • are more in number than the sands of the sea. I am not worthy to look up to the height of heaven, • because of the multitude of my iniquities. And now I bend the knee of my heart before you, • imploring your kindness upon me. I have sinned, O God, I have sinned, • and I acknowledge my transgressions. Unworthy as I am, you will save me, • according to your great mercy. For all the host of heaven sings your praise, • and your glory is for ever and ever. Hebrews 1 Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say, ‘You are my Son; today I have begotten you’? Or again, ‘I will be his Father, and he will be my Son’? And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, ‘Let all God’s angels worship him.’ Of the angels he says, ‘He makes his angels winds, and his servants flames of fire.’ But of the Son he says, ‘Your throne, O God, is for ever and ever, and the righteous sceptre is the sceptre of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.’ And, ‘In the beginning, Lord, you founded the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands; they will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like clothing; like a cloak you will roll them up, and like clothing they will be changed. Are not all angels spirits in the divine service, sent to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation? To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul; O my God, in you I trust. from Psalm 25 Gospel Canticle The Benedictus (The Song of Zechariah) is normally said, or Saviour of the World (page 644) may be said Refrain: Christ gave them as a light to the nations that his salvation might reach to the ends of the earth. Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel, • who has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty Saviour, • born of the house of his servant David. Through his holy prophets God promised of old • to save us from our enemies, from the hands of all that hate us, To show mercy to our ancestors, • and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham: • to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear, • holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, • for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give his people knowledge of salvation • by the forgiveness of all their sins. In the tender compassion of our God • the dawn from on high shall break upon us, To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, • and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Luke 1.68-79 Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen. Refrain: Christ gave them as a light to the nations that his salvation might reach to the ends of the earth. Prayers Intercessions are offered ¶ for the day and its tasks ¶ for the world and its needs ¶ for the Church and her life The cycle on pages 364–365 and the prayer on page 377 may be used. The Collect of the day is said Almighty God, who in your providence chose your servant Patrick to be the apostle of the Irish people: keep alive in us the fire of the faith he kindled and strengthen us in our pilgrimage towards the light of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. The Lord’s Prayer is said Trusting in the compassion of God, as our Saviour taught us, so we pray Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. (or) Trusting in the compassion of God, let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Conclusion May God our Redeemer show us compassion and love. Amen. Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God.
