MY FINAL WEEK @ HARVEST (DAY 4) Cannot believe it is Thursday - TopicsExpress

MY FINAL WEEK @ HARVEST (DAY 4) Cannot believe it is Thursday already, only one more office day to go wow! My memory for today is named Serbia, Serbia, Serbia, Serbia. Now you may ask, Gary why did you put Serbia four times? Well let me explain. Up until 2009 I had never been one for following in the footsteps of others by venturing out into the mission field. In fact the very idea used to shivers of fear down my spine, I just hated the thought of leaving my homeland for longer than a couple of days. Even when we cross the border into England for a holiday I get homesick within a couple of days. Moira always hinted at me coming on missions trips which she loves to do but I never felt up for it. One particular Sunday morning in August, one of our elders Maurice Logie stood up and announced that he was heading to a little village in Serbia called Backo Pettereve Sello. It was a very poor village with great poverty, unemployment, starvation and horrendous living conditions. Maurice announced that he was heading in with his wife Linda, their daughter Cheryl and one other who would be filming the whole thing to allow us to share the extent of the poverty with other churches via a DVD. He asked if their was anyone else who would love to come with them on this trip. Well to my surprise I went up afterwards and asked if I could go. I had to pick Moira up off the floor when I told her and she had this funny grin on her face that just never went away. We left for Serbia meeting up with a couple of missionaries that changed my life. Etelka És Gábor Muzslai. They are a couple who live in Budapest and travel every week into this village across the Serbian Border taking clothes, food, money and sometimes so poor themselves taking only their Bibles. They travelled with their many children. I was so shocked at the poverty in this village. No one had food except mushy buckets of what I can only describe as slime soup. Some people had one stove with a pot boiling just one potato which would keep them going for days not surprisingly the potato was often stolen. We got involved in everything we could taking food to homes, praying for people, cleaning stuff and taking in the magnitude of the task that was before us. When we left I knew I had to go back, so I got a team together of my youth leaders, Moira who was still smirking and our eldest son Kyle Scott Beggan And in April 2010 we headed off again to Serbia. It was an incredible trip of taking food packages, delivering leaflets, cleaning, praying for the sick, we had a youth outreach movie night and we held a football tournament in the local village centre, I cannot get that image out of my head after Amy Malone gave her testimony, making a call to see who would like to receive Jesus into their hearts that almost everyone in the stadiums hands went up. Gabor and Etta and their family were becoming our favourite people n the world who just welcomed us in. We slept on mattresses, washed in egg smelling yellow coloured water but we did not care because it was just simply life changing. We came home and knew that we should go back with our youth group so again in July 2010 we took a bunch of the youth and what an amazing trip it was, we helped with the kids club, gave out food packages, ran youth outreaches and wept like babies at times. We even baptised people including one of our own youth in a Green lake which Gabor assured me was safe until when I was standing in it helping him baptise people a water snake casually skimmed passed us. Which was a rare moment of calm for me lol. Our youths lives were changed by this trip. Again however Moira and I decide to spend our Easter vacation their in April 2011 we packed up our kids flew into Slovakia drove through Hungary into Serbia and spent a week with Gabor and Etta and their family ministering it was just incredible. This is why I said Serbia four times. Moira has been in since taking a team of ladies in to minster and pamper the local ladies and I am sure that soon I will head off again. Harvest has invested so much time and money into this work and we are truly blessed being able to do kids clubs and fee the poor because of their generosity. Treasure stored up in heaven my friends.
