Many of us will use online shopping during this holiday season. Most of us know to only use websites that we trust to secure our financial information but it is also important to secure our purchases once they arrive. Unattended deliveries are an easy target for the Grinch! Here are a few tips to prevent a theft of your holiday packages: 1 – Have your item delivered to a location where someone can receive it in person. This may be a neighbor, relative or even your workplace. 2 – Ask your neighbor to look out for an expected delivery and retrieve it from your property once it arrives. You may choose to track the package via online services and notify your neighbor or friend of its arrival. Remind your neighbors to report suspicious activity around your home to police! 3 – Request signature confirmation as part of the delivery. This will require someone sign for the package before it is left by the courier. 4 – Purchase optional insurance for valuable items but make sure you understand what type of theft and damage claims are accepted. 5 – Request that the shipper hold the package at their facility for delivery on a day more convenient for you. In some situations, you can provide special delivery instructions to the shipping company to leave packages in an out-of-sight location. Following these simple tips can help prevent theft of your holiday purchases. Perhaps the simplest step is reporting suspicious activity around your and your neighbor’s homes. You know if something does not “look right” in your community so please do not ignore it. The easiest way to report suspicious activity is by calling our non-emergency number (919-362-8661).
