Many urbanists did not take kindly to SkyCycle. Mikael Colville-Andersen, who runs the urban mobility consulting firm Copenhagendize, called the scheme a “city-killing, Blade Runner fantasy.” He writes: “Removing great numbers of citizens who could be cycling down city streets past shops and cafés on their way to work or school and placing them on a shelf, far away from everything else.” I mentioned this to Foster when I contacted him about a profile I recently wrote for The Peak magazine. He seemed irritated by the suggestion that SkyCycle was a way to remove bicycles from city life. “Far too many cyclists die or are seriously injured in accidents in London,” he said. “How can you question any serious attempt to confront this issue?
