Matariki child vs Solstice child I Good day Team. When I woke up this morning, I was surprised to find that already not only had the month passed by but in the past week we had celebrated winter solstice in New Zealand and Matariki. Winter solstice marked the shortest day of the year, typically mid-winter in the southern hemisphere and Matariki is the first day of the Maori New Year, two cultures, two celebrations. Other than that, the weather down here is cool but not as cold as previous years; all to do with climate change I am told. That brings me to the point of this newsletter, Climate change. Eventually climate change will affect us all and not just the weather. As humans, we tend to gather people and things about us that help us to make sense of our world and assist with defining our place or value in the societies that we move in. Some fortunate individuals have managed to find a balance with work, family, friendship and their place in the grand scheme of things; others are still struggling to find meaning and a place that they can call their own. No matter which camp you are in, the same trials and seasons of change will come your way the difference will be in the way you as an individual respond to and acclimate to the change in season. You see, you can choose to say it is the solstice, the coldest, deepest, and darkest point of my year/life, or you can choose to believe that it is Matariki, the beginning of a new season where things will get better because new light and growth is on the way. I choose Matariki over solstice, hope over despair and a future that is bright over a past that is bleak. No matter what season of life or business we are in, by default we should be looking forward to the opportunity that it brings. When out walking on my crutches or in my wheelchair, I have to concentrate on the path directly in front of me so I do not trip or tip over. In doing this, I could totally miss what goes on around me except for one thing. I am a Matariki boy. As such, I choose to pause often and see how far I have come then readjust my focus on where I need to get to achieve my exercise goal for the day. So are you living in a solstice season or are you choosing Matariki. If you want to live as a child of the Matariki season you must not give up or give over to despair but keep searching, planting seeds and waiting with hope.
