Mid-Hudson unemployment rates much lower in January than year earlier, NY labor department says Freeman staff Unemployment rates in Mid-Hudson counties rose from December to January, a common occurrence after holiday season jobs end, but data released Tuesday by the state Department of Labor showed marked improvement across the region when comparing the January 2014 rates to those from January 2013. In Ulster County, the January 2014 unemployment rate was 7.5 percent, up from the previous month’s 6.5 percent but sharply lower than then January 2013 jobless rate of 9.5 percent, the department said. Likewise, it said, joblessness in Dutchess County rose from 5.8 percent in December to 6.6 in January, but that was much lower than January 2013’s rate of 8.3 percent. The January 2014 unemployment rates in other local counties were as follows, according to the labor department. • Greene: 7.8 percent, up from 7.2 percent in December but dramatically lower than the 10.1 percent rate of January 2013. • Columbia: 6.4 percent, compared to 5.3 percent in December and 8.3 percent in January 2013. • Delaware: 8.1 percent, compared to 6.7 percent and 10.1 percent. • Sullivan: 8.9 percent, compared to 7.9 and 10.7. • Orange: 6.6 percent, compared to 5.8 and 8.5. The statewide unemployment rate in January 2014 was 7.3 percent, up from the previous month’s 6.1 percent but down nearly 2 points from the 9.1 percent rate of January 2013, the labor department said.
