Mighty Man of Valour And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him, and said unto him, The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valour. (Judges 6:12 KJV) Valor: great courage in the face of danger, especially in battle. Courage: is the ability and willingness to confront fear, pain, danger, uncertainty, or intimidation. Physical courage is courage in the face of physical pain, hardship, death, or threat of death, while moral courage is the ability to act rightly in the face of popular opposition, shame, scandal, or discouragement. Last night I heard a teaching about Christians being warriors. It inspired me to go home and look up the word warrior in the bible. I was surprised to see that there are only 3 references to the word warrior in the King James Version. I found that King James used the term “Mighty Man of Valour” which other versions have translated to be “Warriors” As usual my interpretation of the word “warrior” seemed to miss the mark. I have always believed that warrior meant soldier, someone who fights in battle. It turns out it means much more than that to God. In the reference above God’s Angel is speaking to Gideon (who considered himself to be a lowly coward) and sending him to fight against the Midianites who have plundered Israel. Yes, He indeed is sending soldiers with him but He is qualifying Gideon as the Mighty Man of Valour who will lead them. Imagine Gideon who thinks very lowly of himself being told that he is the one chosen by God to do this frightening thing. God saw Gideon as a man of great courage. Courage (as we see in the definition) is the ability and willingness to confront fear, pain, danger, uncertainty, or intimidation. Physical courage is courage in the face of physical pain, hardship, death, or threat of death, while moral courage is the ability to act rightly in the face of popular opposition, shame, scandal, or discouragement. Obviously, God was seeing something Gideon was not. What Gideon failed to hear was the words, “The lord is with thee.” When God is with us, we become His Mighty Men of Courage. We as Christians should believe that we are facing these challenges coming from the winning position, with no possibility of losing. Right now Christians are being persecuted and slain in areas of the world and God is once again faithful to His people. The Lord is a warrior, the Lord is his name. (Exodus 15:3) He will rescue those who are confident in His ability. He may choose one who, like Gideon, feels he can never accomplish the feat, but the battle is the Lord’s. Remember He sees whom He created us to be, not whom we see in our mirror. When facing any circumstance or battle we must remember that it is not up to us to win because God has already defeated all His enemies and the last enemy to defeat is death. As a Christian you are called to be courageous and confidant in your God. The circumstances you face today are training you to face any danger or ridicule as a mighty man (or woman) of valour. Remember, the bigger they are, the harder they fall to an unyielding God.
