Millions of bees in the US are dropping dead. And if something - TopicsExpress

Millions of bees in the US are dropping dead. And if something isn’t done soon, we could be witnessing a global food catastrophe. Scientists have linked a powerful class of pesticides called “neonics” to the increase in bee die-offs. The problem has gotten so bad that last winter alone 31% of hives in the US collapsed. Bees are responsible for pollinating many of the fruits and vegetables that are staples in our diet. Imagine a world without apples, avocados, and almonds. That’s what will happen if we don’t ban these pesticides and save the bees. Greenpeace has launched a global campaign to save bees. Their three-step plan is simple and it’s already working in places like Europe: Ban the seven most dangerous pesticides Protect pollinator health by preserving wild habitat Restore ecological agriculture. A bill was just introduced in Congress that would impose a ban on neonics until a scientific review and field studies prove no harm will come to bee populations from their use. Public pressure is needed to convince Congress to pass the critical Save America’s Pollinators Act. The companies that make these pesticides, Bayer and Syngenta, have spent millions lobbying politicians to make sure this bill never sees the light of day. The only chance it has is if we create widespread public support.
