Mixing Law with Grace? I read and hear a lot of different - TopicsExpress

Mixing Law with Grace? I read and hear a lot of different believers speaking of the dangers of performance based thinking. We are warned to avoid ‘mixing grace with law.’ I certainly understand the concept but at times I think that some are throwing out the baby with the bath water. Is it mixing law and grace when we understand our full potential in Christ as an opportunity for growth and increase? Is it performance based thinking to apply Kingdom principles to our lives? Does it mean that we are seeking God’s approval, or, does it mean that we are walking in God’s purposes? It is important that we understand the difference. I have never been a performance based thinker in my relationship with God. I understood God’s unconditional love from day 1 of my salvation. But I quickly became excited about understanding God’s potential in me (Philemon 1:6). Realizing how much more potential I had in Christ, versus my very limited future without Him, only made me hungry to be fully given to His purpose in my life. Was I mixing the Law with grace? No. Sowing and reaping, giving and receiving, speaking the Word, having vision, being perseverant, not indulging the flesh, etc., are not signs of legalism but manifestations of love! If you are in love with Jesus, you will be a potential driven believer. There will be no paralyzing fear of legalism, but rather the liberating joy of growing unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ!
