Monday, October 7, 2013 “…brings forth out of his treasure things both old and new” –Matthew 12:35 Good Morning Heavenly Father, Family & Friends!! (*) Yesterday’s Discovered Treasure for Today: “For all those words which were written long ago are meant to teach us today; that when we read in the scriptures of the endurance of men and of all the help that God gave them in those days, we may be encouraged to go on hoping in our own time . . . May the God who inspires men to endure, and gives them a Father’s care, give you a mind united towards one another because of your common loyalty to Jesus Christ. And then, as one man, you will sing from the heart the praises of God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. So open your hearts to one another as Christ has opened his heart to you, and God will be glorified. (Romans 15:4-5 J B Phillips New Testament). (*) Today’s Application: How often do we find ourselves in a quarry with so much stuff to get done and no further time left to do it. And to make things worse, this happens as often as well because of the things we were doing that could have waited to another opportune time? “If I hadn’t gone shopping... If I hadn’t sat down and began watching that movie… If I hadn’t got sick when I did ...” Sometimes it takes an experience of sickness or some other overcoming setback to get us to slow down, stop and reprioritize our lives. It is during these times of being caught with nothing we can do because of our setback, we then set a spell and begin thinking back on those past regrets, seeing mistakes and missed opportunities? Things we think we should have or should not have done can sometimes frustrate even the calmest of folk. It’s a common problem we all have at one time or another. In Romans 15, the Apostle Paul talks of the endurance and encouragement of God. The God we love and desire to honor is patient and comforting in His character. He endures, He gives endurance. He is encouragement, He gives encouragement. In Romans 15:4, it is written that endurance and encouragement is secured through God’s Word. In Romans 15:5, it states they are found in God Himself. Is this a contradiction? No, for God is truth and His Word is truth. He gives us the endurance to deal with the frustrations of missed chances, and the comfort to know that He is there for us no matter what happens. Undoubtedly, we are admonished here to rest in God’s love and security. Further, we are directed to the Scriptures, our Bibles, as our source of comfort and hope. We are encouraged to go against the fears and anxieties promoted by the self-degrading ‘should haves’ of life (and many times we know we should have, but cannot readily change the consequences on this particular day). So then, what do we do now? We stop recounting our past errors . . . stop thinking of what might have been. The future is still at hand, and we still have a long “to do” list. Let us not be found lamenting the past any longer, but be found with a new song of praise in our hearts for the future. Let today be the first day of the rest of our lives!! 0;-)
