Monday morning, post-closing thoughts: I have a seriously renewed appreciation for backstage crew. They work without thunderous applause or mentions in the paper to scrapbook. Heres to them: -Production managers who deal with, at times, revolving door hiring & the stress of production meetings where everyone is SO STRESSED OUT. For our last show, Bobby Hunter also got to deal with crazy emails from neighborhood weirdos. And he did it all with calm, good natured, evenness. Stage Managers like Laura Wood, who put in 14 hour days, handled fires (literally) and dealt with craziness like visits from authorities, sass from all directions, and dealt with a flashlight we wont ever discuss again. ASMs like Derek, Amanda, Max, Laura, and Christy who also put in 14 hour days, built & broke down structures, carried ALL OF THE THINGS, dealt with props ranging from food to fake joints, put up with so much off-stage drama, and cleaned up the mess at the end of every day. And to my fellow producers out there, who have near-daily heart attacks, endless headaches, money concerns nobody wants to hear about, and the long days in the trenches with the above wonders of the back stage. The audience rarely thinks about how much you do, but I sure will. The art happens because you are there to create the structure and make it all work. Without yall, there is no show. So next time those in my FB circle raise a glass, do it for the folks you dont see whose work is vital to what you do see. Cheers.
