More than 100 million women in less developed countries would prefer to avoid pregnancy, but are not using any form of family planning. These women are considered to have an unmet need for family planning. (Ross and Winfrey 2001) Demographic and health surveys reveal that more than half of men and women in many African countries either wanted to wait at least two years before having their next child or had the family size they wanted. Yet there were nearly 39 million unintended pregnancies in Africa between 1994 and 2000. (Hill 2007)
