Mt Ugo Historical Background The legendary Mt. Ugo has an elevation of 2,150 meters above sea level. It was known earlier as Umag-aga, but it was later renamed as Ugo after the series of killings by the busol (headhunters) including the Spanish Secretary General only known as Juanchito. The word Ugo was derived from the Ibaloi word Ugoan, to slit the throat. The tri-boundary marker at the summit erected by the Americans in 1901 is still in place indicating the three provinces namely Nueva Vizcaya on the east, Pangasinan on the southwest, and then the Mountain Province on the northwest. In the early 1960s, a UC45 from Cubi Airport in Subic crashed at the slope of Mt. Ugo in Kaliaudan, a sitio in Tinongdan. This was manned by three pilots: Lindsay Ogden Tumbler; Doug Barrel, and Schneider Garret. Their ranks were 1-star, 2-stars and 3-stars (in no particular order). The three pilots survived the crash. Accordingly, the plane had a mechanical trouble while flying above Pangasinan so it descended to a lower altitude until it crashed at Mt. Ugo. Mr. Tomas Lacquias, a nearby resident of the area tried to help the victims. his three-days old boy during the accident was named after one of the pilots, Lindsay. On the fateful day of June 26, 1987, a Hawker Siddeley HS-748 aircraft with registration number. RPC1015 of the Philippine Airlines (PAL) from Manila bound to the City of Baguio rammed the southern portion of Mt. Ugo, about one kilometer below the summit, killing all 50 passengers and crew on board, the most tragic incident in the history of air transport in the Province of Benguet. The plane crashed while attempting to land in a monsoon flight into known adverse conditions by the crew. Usually a cloud-clothed mountain, the pilot may have not noticed the terrain while the plane flying at low altitude in preparation for a landing at Loakan Airport in Baguio City, about five minutes away from the crash site. Mr. Lacquias and son Lindsay (then a grown-up guy) were among the residents who rushed to the crash site supposedly to rescue. Later, as they were trying to gather personal belongings of the victims, the helicopter being used to the retrieval operations manned by Captain Gallardo crashed, nearly hunting the members of the operations including Mr. Lacquias. Fortunately, the passengers and crew onboard survived. As a sign of gratitude, PAL management sponsored Lindasys education as he took up aircraft mechanic course. He was later employed by PAL as ground maintenance crew. These series of incidents did not create negative impressions. Instead, it paved way to its discovery as tourist destination. Yearly after, expeditions were made by PAL employees and victims relatives to commemorate their loved ones who perished in the accident. Later, several mountaineering groups followed, and now an alternative of Mt. Pulag.
