My Daily Constitution Presents a Constitution Conversation: The Constitutional Rights of Public School Students with regard to Freedom of Speech Tuesday Dec 2 6 - 8 PM Levittown Branch, Bucks County Public Library Large Meeting Room 7311 New Falls Road, Levittown, PA 19055-1006 This past year, editors of Neshaminy High School student newspaper The Playwickian have been making local and national news by steadfastly refusing to compromise on their right to determine their editorial policy over the use of the name of the school mascot, despite the school administrations insistence that they are not allowed to make that determination. Prompted by this situation, My Daily Constitution asks, Just what ARE the constitutional rights of public school students with regards to freedom of speech? Join us for this special constitution conversation, where we will examine Neshaminy and several precedent setting cases in our constitutional history: Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier, Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District, among others. Constitutional Talent: William R. McLaughlin Special Guests: Student Newspaper Editors of Playwickian School Newspaper - Free and open to the Public - Complimentary Copies of The U.S. Constitution included with Admission - Doors open 5:45 PM - more at: mydailyconstitution.org + [email protected] ABOUT: MY DAILY CONSTITUTION creates public dialogue about the U.S. Constitution in unlikely spaces across the United States. The project was launched in 2002 for the exhibit “Democracy When?” at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions. “The idea,” says founder Linda Pollack, “was to break away from the dynamics of the large lecture hall and create a space where individuals and communities can become active participants in a dialogue about our democracy. Our Constitution, our democracy, is about interpretation– and interpretation means a collective, active dialogue, not just passive consumers and lawmaking producers. The U.S. Constitution is a living document, part of our day to day life, influencing us in both large and small ways daily.” WILLIAM R. McLAUGHLIN is an attorney in Philadelphia with a background in constitutional law. Before starting his own practice, Bill was a clinical assistant professor at Rutgers Law School in Camden, NJ. From 2006 through 2014 he taught and co-directed the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project at Rutgers University, a selective year-long program that trains law students to understand principles of constitutional analysis and interpretation in a way that makes these principles accessible to the general public. Law students who complete the first semester of the course are certified to teach a semester of constitutional law to local high school students. The Marshall-Brennan curriculum is built around cases that focus on the rights of public school students in areas such as free speech, privacy, and religious exercise. LINDA POLLACK founded and directs My Daily Constitution. A Los Angeles based artist, Levittown native, and former Neshaminy School District student, Linda studied economics in Pennsylvania, and studio art in the Netherlands and in California. From 1990 through 1995 Linda worked for Amsterdam-based European Cultural Foundation, where she set up a number of initiatives addressing culture and civil society in war torn Yugoslavia, collaborating with groups including The Helsinki Monitor, Press Now, the Sarajevo Theatre Festival, Macedonian rock stars “Leb i Sol”, among others. My Daily Constitution continues Lindas investigation into the culture of democracy as she creates new, fluid spaces where We The People can come together to discuss the challenges and possibilities of our shared civic life. MDC proposes to go beyond the visible symbols of patriotism, and invites us to explore the less visible yet no less important world of civic ideals and community engagement. After many years of creating Constitution conversations in cities across the United States and abroad, Linda is thrilled to invite her home town community to come out and explore The Constitutional Rights of Public School Students with regard to Freedom of Speech.
