My Dear Sister and Friend, Valerie Lewis-Moseley Thank you so - TopicsExpress

My Dear Sister and Friend, Valerie Lewis-Moseley Thank you so much for sharing the good news about a building being named in honor of our dear sister and BC alumna Dr.Julianne Malveaux at Bennett College. If you don’t mind I’d like to build on what you’ve shared. I want Boston College alumni and current students to know that Dr. Malveaux was not only one of the best AHANA students to graduate from Boston College, she was one of the brightest, of all students, to have ever graduated from the University. Think about this: Dr. Malveaux entered Boston College after the 11th grade, and earned a B.A.’(74) and M.A (75) Degrees in economics there in three years and continued on to earn a PH.D in Economic from MIT in 1980. While an undergraduate, and graduate student, Dr. Malveaux was deeply involved in leadership of the Black Talent Program, which was the forerunner of the Office of Minority Student Programs and the Office of AHANA Student Programs. The focus of the Black Talent Program was on making certain that Black students had the support needed to successfully navigate the University. During her undergraduate years she was also inducted into the IOTA Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Dr. Julianne Malveaux is a brilliant public intellectual. Given both her scholarship and leadership, it is so fitting that Bennett College, where she served as president for five years, has named a building in her honor. It is also fitting that several colleges have seen fit to award her honorary doctoral degrees. Included among them are Benedict College, Sojourner-Douglass College and the University of the District of Columbia. Having shared the above Val, I want to underscore the following: I think it is time for her alma Mater, Boston College to award Dr. Julianne Malveaux an honorary Doctorate degree. Through her scholarly efforts she has brought distinction to Boston College. While I think all AHANA alumni should push for an honorary degree fro this great woman, I especially think that her sorors- alumni and current Boston College members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. should be in the vanguard in pushing the University to award Dr. Malveaux an honorary Doctorate degree. The process begins with a letter to the University Secretary Rev. Terrence Devino, S.J. (information below) asking that Dr. Malveaux be considered for an honorary degree. To help in justifying your request, a great deal of information can be found by goggling her name and reading Wikipedia. Please push, dear friends, to make certain that this brilliant daughter of Boston College, and my and your friend, is acknowledged fro her great work on behalf of those who will not or cannot speak for themselves!
