My fellow Americans: Im really saddened with the way our current debate regarding immigration has shaped up. The rhetoric, fear and factionalism are decidedly un- American ! Exiting ones country of birth and making the often harrowing journey to our shores is in fact a MOST American tradition. Focus on green cards ,visas and other technical factors misses the point. It is not recent immigrants who are un-American. It is us, decedents of immigrants who have become un-American. Chatter about immigrants ,welfare and paying for others is pure hogwash! Immigrants didnt come to rob our homes. They have come to paint them, manicure our nails,our lawns and deliver take out food to our homes on a Friday evening, in exchange for a humble wage- a MOST American of enterprises. Americans overwhelmingly agree the country is headed in the wrong direction. Declining class mobility has rendered us no longer believing in the American dream. Its worth bearing in mind that the recent immigrant painting your house or vacuuming your carpet does so with the strong belief that his children will one day occupy such a fine dwelling. He dares to dream the American Dream- a MOST American inclination. The hamburger that most American of food was itself brought to our shores by an earlier wave of German immigrants who went on to make our country the most productive agricultural land in the world, facilitating urbanization, industrialization, indeed invention itself - a MOST American tradition. Over a decade ago salsa replaced ketchup as the most used condiment,add a slice of mozzarella,compliments of Italian immigration and we can all agree todays burgers are better than our grandfathers burgers. We can also all agree it goes best with Coca-Cola an elixir dreamed up by decedents of immigrants in an Atlanta pharmacy over a century ago- a MOST American of inventions! Prescribing how others integrate is not in our tradition. We have a 400 plus year history of assimilating immigrants. Our kitschy culture simultaneously devoured and ridiculed by our European cousins has a time proven knack of catching on. Immigration flatters our cultural attributes. Rest assured the sons of Mr. Diaz and Mr. Chen will aspire to hit a home run on the little league field, date a cheerleader and upon passing his drivers test blast American pop music from his car stereo- a MOST American of pastimes. It isnt undocumented aliens who are un- American it is us who have become un- American, forgetting who we are and why we have achieved so much in such a short period of time. The onus is not on immigrants to prove to us they are Americans. Immigrants risks and dreams clearly illustrate they are indeed , MOST American.!!! The onus is on us native born folk to remember and display our Americanism- open arms and borders would be a good start !! Have a burger , a coke , and a smile !!! Bon appetite !
