My friends fr The Hindu: none of u have ever seen this...per chance yr eyes stumbled upon this u moved away quickly :) The job of the readers editor is to collect, consider, investigate, respond to, and where appropriate come to a conclusion about readers comments, concerns, and complaints in a prompt and timely manner, from a position of independence within the paper, says the Guardian. When comrade Ram announced the apptment of the newspapers first such editor, he said it would be modelled after the Guardians of course. But then but for the first editor Mr K Narayanan, none else seem to have done any justice to job. Look at the present editors cloying praise of JJ verdict coverage. He has his justification, alright, but these things cd have been dealt thro internal memos and not thro public columns, which could be justly described as nothing but a promo. Rarely have I seen my long-time friend Panneerselvam seriously grapple with any readers grievance...Its all sermons how the world is, how the media is etc. He is assiduously following in the footsteps of his immediate predecessor, only cloaked in more highfalutin phrases. Hats off to Mr Narayanan whom Ive never met but only heard abt. a no-nonsense man who gave the complacent sanctimonious ram team sleepless nights. Of course he had to operate within the confines of the mandate laid down by The Hindu, but he acquitted himself creditably. I am unable to access his farewell piece or some such where he administers a stinging slap, from Beijing to CPM to Tibet, ne kept reminding them they were atrociously partisan. Mr Ram, typical of a Marxist of Stalinist variety, realizing the mistake he had committed in appointing someone like Mr Narayanan sd have been happy to see him go and has ensured no truble-maker of the type became a readers editor thereafter.
