My nuit blanche 2014 top 3: #2 Split Chorale for Viljo Revell, 2014 I give this work the number 2 spot because it used the space it was in to the greatest effect. Hilarious video projected onto the rotunda column (performers chewing gum, eating Lays potato chips, taking off their pants, talking on their cell phones), lights that showed off the architecture and those amazing aluminum channel ceilings at City Hall while creating a disturbing glow on the faces of the performers. Ok, so the performers. Yes! Dozens of voyeuristic singers on all the levels of the rotunda, like an Eyes Wide Shut Gentlemens Club Night Out at the Opera. All singing drones, overtones, echoes that you could hear across the rotunda while simultaneously hearing the individual voices of the performers you were nearest, like a Janet Cardiff installation. This installation also gets points for controlling the amount of people inside at one time so that the experience is of many people looking down and watching a few, and also that everyone just shut the hell up in this space, the polar opposite of everything on Queen and Spadina.
