My youngest son and I headed out to run some errands and pick up a few things. First stop the bank. I ran in quickly and Josh wanted to wait in the car. As I entered the bank I thought this must be my lucky day, only one person in line. She was leaning on the island in the middle of the bank. I smiled and simply asked the woman how she was doing. Without looking at me she answered, “I could be better.” And then she turned her back to me. Before I could even respond to her I felt pain in my lower back and right leg. If you get the picture here, I was now staring at this woman’s backside. I asked the question that I have become very used to asking when an unusual pain hits me like this. “Is this my pain or someone else’s?” I knew instantly that it was not my pain. I wasn’t sure what to do next as the woman was called to an open teller. I also moved into an open spot a few windows down. I finished and tried to linger then slowly made my way to the door and car. As I sat there wondering what I could have done differently the woman exited the bank and got into her red SUV and left the parking lot. I was quiet as Joshua and I headed to our next stop. I parked and started to head towards the video store when out of the corner of my eye I saw the red SUV pull into a nearby gas station. “Josh get back in the car.” I said as I unlocked the doors and jumped in not having a clue what I would do next. I pulled up to the other side of the pump and gave Josh $20.00 to pay for gas so I could think about what I might do next. I knew that I only had a few minutes. I moved to the back of my van and said, “Hey, didn’t I just see you at the bank?” The startled woman looked up. I moved in closer, “This might seem a little weird but do you have severe pain in your lower back and right leg?” she shook her head “yes” I am a healing technician I said as if it were my official title or something. “How do you know that my back hurts?” she quietly asked “It’s part of the job.” I replied and almost laughed at my own quick response “Would it be okay if I prayed for your pain to go away right now?” I gently asked She started to cry and raised her voice “Somebody needs too!” Instantly I was in tears too. I asked her if I could just hug her first and she grabbed me around the neck. This stranger at the gas station buried her face in my shoulder and sobbed. I wrapped my arms around her and I could feel the pain of her life After a couple of minutes she pulled away and said, “You said this might seem a little weird. I would say that this is a lot weird.” We both laughed and I asked her if I could pray for her pain now. Again she shook her head “yes”. I placed my hand lightly on her back and simply prayed for the love of God to move in and take away the pain, We talked for a few minutes and hugged again. I asked how she was feeling and she stood on the right leg for a second and said, “This is so odd, it feels better.” She looked at me, “This was no accident. Was it?” “No” I replied, “This is no accident.” In that moment I also understood why the first connection was made in the middle of the bank but the real encounter needed to be as private as the 3 feet between the red SUV and the gas pump. This was a perfectly private little space for the love of the God to show up and take away her pain.
