NEW PARADIGMS CONFERENCE 2013: Call for Papers New Paradigms 2013 – annual ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION CONFERENCE The PURPOSE of this conference is: CONNECTING Research and Practice of ARCHITECTURE and LINKING of Theory and Design in ARCHITECTURE The overall theme of NEW PARADIGMS is exploring the role of Architecture within a new Paradigm. ARCHITECTURE AS PURPOSEFUL BEHAVIOUR is a statement, a question and a reminder to the profession of our responsibility to become resilient in our approach to the challenges of urbanisation in creating OPPORTUNITY. The second call for papers is an invitation for short, provocative, visual presentations that could be anything from 3-5 minutes but not exceeding 15 minutes. It is an opportunity to question and initiate change. NEW PARADIGMS is an annual gathering of academics, researchers and practicing architects to: showcase innovation, generate debate, theorise opportunities and challenges in architecture and related disciplines, and to provide a platform for disseminating research findings. DAY 1 - 4 October 2013 One day conference - 4 consecutive sessions – posing questions, inputs and ideas, keynote (1 local + 1 global) , interactive session, reflective session Evening cocktail party DAY 2 - 5 October 2013 Follow up interactive workshop on day 2 for academics and researchers to present and discuss their current research Call for papers: Submissions are invited from experienced and novice researchers, scholars and practitioners. The selection of papers will be on the basis of relatedness with the theme and sub-theme. The emphasis will be on presentations to be short, provocative, and preferably illustrated. Keynote Speaker(s) will present 45 minutes All other presentations will be from 3-5 minutes to a max of 15 minutes. Please also indicate willingness to be selected to participate in the facilitated interactive session. Participants may also be speakers. Participation from the floor will also be possible. NEW PARADIGMS: Architecture as Purposeful Behaviour Scales of relevance: Africa; South-Africa; Kwa-Zulu Natal; Durban Sub-themes and Keywords: Resilience – climate change; ecology; politics; economy; communication; diversity; voice; food; innovation Urbanisation – informality; poverty; food; culture; diversity; identity, innovation Responsibility – ethics; profession; education; quality (life and place); multi/inter-disciplinarily Important Dates: Call for Abstracts 11 June 2013 Extended Final date for submission of Abstracts 22 July 2013 Notification of Abstract acceptance 26 July 2013 Submission of Final Papers 12 September 2013 Conference registration opens 1 August 2013 Presenters: Final date for conference registration 16 August 2013 All other delegates: Final date for conference registration 20 September 2013 Abstract Submission: Provide a topic and write a brief abstracts of no more than 300 words. Identify how your topic relates to the main theme. Identify which of the sub-themes the paper will relate to. As a guideline to Abstract writing it is advisable to include the following elements: Motivation/problem statement: Why do we care about the problem? What practical, scientific, theoretical or artistic gap is your research/enquiry filling? Methods/procedure/approach: What did or do you intend to do to understand the problem? Results/findings/product: As a result of completing the above procedure, what did you discover/learn/develop? Conclusion/implications: What are the larger implications of your findings, especially for the problem/gap identified in step 1?
