NEXT WEEK! The Earth Keltic Voodoo Boogaloo Soul/ pop Listen: https://youtube/watch?v=guYOL2FLpCA * Brought together by Mark Roberts, formerly of stratospheric hit-makers Catatonia, with Dafydd Ieuan, the rhythmic pulse of leftfield pop alchemists Super Furry Animals, emerging Cardiff quartet The Earth will release their new album on 29th September. Sonically, The Earth takes a radically different approach from its renowned predecessors. It’s Motown meets Northern Soul for a new age; it’s urban blues with an undercurrent of analog synth chaos. The Earth’s secret weapon is vocalist Dionne Bennett, who Ieuan discovered when he was looking for a guest vocalist for Rhys Ifans’ hedonistic rock ‘n’ roll collective The Peth. Cardiff-born and raised in Deptford before returning to the Welsh capital, Bennett cuts an imposing 6’ 1” figure and her voice amplifies the music’s themes of loss, longing and utter defiance with innate instinct to convey emotions with a crescendo of power or cracked vulnerability. Particularly impressive is the recent single ‘Baby Bones’, a hazy, slow-burning old school R&B vibe that laments a “cul-de-sac of pain.” The remaining songs run a gamut of styles, genres and emotions, all topped with Bennett’ towering vocal gift and an almost old-fangled production which favours warmth over sheer compression. “Their contemporary spin on Motown meets Northern Soul combining an urban vibe and analogue synths is utterly compelling” - The Independent Tracklisting: 1) Liberty Road 2) Quick Fix 3) Baby Bones 4) Sea Of Subterfuge 5) I dont Fit In 6) Supersticious Now 7) Rear View Mirror 8) Anything? 9) Cant Have It All 10) The Earth Beats The Machine
