NPMHR calls for ‘community level dialogue’ -cautions against spread of disinformation Kohima, September 9 (MExN): The Naga Peoples’ Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) today stated that Nagas are facing various challenges which will have “far-reaching impact for future generations in the form of policies and statutory decisions.” NPMHR expounded on these “challenges” while holding its General Assembly on September 8 and observing its Founding Day on September 9 in Kohima. A press note from the NPMHR informed that that the General Assembly discussed the present unrest in the Assam-Nagaland border areas and the “militarisation and its unfolding consequences in Ukhrul.” NPMHR expressed its serious concern on these developments and stressed on the need for more community-level dialogue and “strengthening of old ties.” It further called for “more systematic interventions.” While urging the public to be vigilant, the NPMHR stated that “events that are very much outside the control of our society has every possibility to further disintegrate our fragile coexistence.” It asserted that there is a “need to control and regulate the spread of disinformation, which are purportedly circulated with ulterior motives.” It further stressed the need to review policies on natural resources and extractive minerals like oil and natural gas, chromite, coal, etc. NPMHR stated that a “grassroots perspective, evolved through collective consultation, is essential while also looking at present justifications for developmental needs.” It then resolved to initiate public debate and audit for a preliminary position on these issues. NPMHR also evaluated the proposed Nagaland Special Development Zone (NSDZ) and other similar initiatives, which it stated “results in eroding the rights and interest of the people, particularly their control over their lands and territories.” Meanwhile, it was informed that with the change of guard adopted by the General Assembly, the NPMHR is now headed by Neingulo Krome as the Secretary General.
