[Nasty, Dirty, Little Secret In Classroom Education That Parents Of Gifted Students Should Look Out For] Read more... bit.ly/14SKuMg Are you afraid that your gifted child is being stifled or discouraged by unexpected, jealous-hearted, ill-intentioned educators and/or classmates? Look, school can be a tough place. And as much as we’d like to imagine otherwise, there no walls or rules that separate “it” from the “real world” that exists just beyond its campus grounds. In fact “it” – or school – IS the real world. And in every arena, yes even school, there exists supporters and detractors or saboteurs to your child’s progress. In this case, their vitally important educational progress. One student’s story involved being bullied by his English teacher (this story by NO means represents all English teachers) over his spelling performance. He was an extremely gifted child, with exceptional skills particularly in math, reading, writing and spelling, yet he found himself being bullied by a jealous teacher. His teacher even went to great extremes to phone his parents (at home) to say negative things that were untrue about his spelling performance. He was determined to taint this child’s reputation with anyone who knew him. The child was so afraid that his grades not only dropped in English, but also in other classes too. This scenario is extreme, but nevertheless unfortunate, unnecessary, and it sadly happened; this type of harassment occurs everyday in schools across the country. Some professionals are incapable of rising above their personal shortcomings, or negative attitudes about themselves, or others – be it students, coworkers, or colleagues. They let their attitudes and emotions, instead sound judgement (which is completely absent in this case), control their behavior, to their own detriment and the detriment others who are not keen to their destructive patterns. It is vitally important as parents to recognize when an unscrupulous teacher has an unprovoked, personal grievance against your child, and to protect your child from this type of behavior at all costs. The repercussions could last a lifetime – in damage to your child’s self-esteem, haunting childhood memories that warp their outlook on life, to bad grades that follow them for a lifetime. The only thing worse in effect than classmate bullying is teacher bullying. It causes tremendous stress in the student – largely because of the trust students naturally place in their teachers for guidance and protection (that they don’t necessarily place with their classmates or peers; that ship usually sails very early among highly sensitive, gifted children who have been routinely bullied by less academically capable peers) – and it adversely affects their otherwise stellar performance. Unfortunately at ASTRO Tutoring this scenario has come up with our students more times than we’d like to have experienced, and we have been able to help dilute the negative affects to our student’s performance and confidence by offering a warm, supportive learning environment that respectfully engages, challenges and rewards these brilliant students, as they should be. Do you suspect your child is being bullied by his or her teacher? If so, they best option is to transfer them out of the class, or to another school altogether, if that teacher’s influence spreads. However, if those options are not available to you, you may consider acquiring outside academic support, like a highly qualified private tutor, who can provide additional support that respects your child as a human being. No student deserves to be harassed or bullied by their teachers, under ANY circumstances. This finite problem does not have to persist into the future. Pair your child up with a private tutor whose instruction caters to your child’s personality and learning style(s), to ensure that not only their spirits rise, but that their grades and performance match it. That, they do deserve. Fill in the form at the link above to find out more ways to easily help your child at home succeed academically.
