Polaris IT/Net Tip of the Day #6 Web Browsing and Internet - TopicsExpress

Polaris IT/Net Tip of the Day #6 Web Browsing and Internet Security I get asked many times what the best internet browser is and the response is more often than not, it depends. I know this answer is a total scapegoat answer but it really is true. I personally recommend Google Chrome, because it can be customized with add ins but is also directly linked to my Gmail account. Internet Explorer is very secure, in many ways I find it almost too secure. It tends to have issues with allowing certain content and with the newest versions out there some websites dont support it, or at least dont support it very well. Safari, if you are a Mac/Apple person you probably use this. You have the option of using others but my guess is you probably stick with Safari, and there is nothing wrong with that. If you use a PC, Windows, or Linux based Operating System I do not recommend using Safari. Firefox, this is a great alternative for general browsing. It has its ups and downs but is a simple to use and generally simple browser. Fairly secure, and can be customized to a degree. Now time for internet security. I recommend Norton 360. It is more expensive but I find them to be the very best, it includes PC monitoring and optimization, PC online backup, internet security, and virus removal. It auto updates and informs the user what tasks are utilizing the computer most heavily. Will also inform you of real time threats to your system. If you arent going to pay for internet security get something. My general rule of using the internet is pinkie toe immersion. I had a Security+ instructor describe the internet as a festering cesspool of filth and danger. I tend to agree. Dont visit sites you are unfamiliar with, if you are researching set your content filter to the highest protection possible, academic websites will not be vulgar or offensive in their nature. DONT EVER ROAM ALONE!!!!!! If you are going to use the internet just to gee whiz about, do it in a public place with people who will judge you. Seriously, just do it. Finally if you are using a social networking site like Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, etc...dont just click on a photo cause it looks neat. Open the photo in a new tab or window, or at least check where the photo or link will take you. If you just randomly accept a link, it could include .exe files that download your computer info or upload who knows what. Sorry for the soap box tip today but it will save you heartache, time, and money if you just take a few simple precautions. And as always if you have concerns or need help feel free to call or email and Ill set up an appointment with you. Surf Safe my friends!!!!
