New Data Reveals THIS About U.S. Mexico Border Crossings And It’s Not What You Think When most people think of border patrol and illegal immigration issues, most people associate it with the Mexican population and believe that they are the largest group to be apprehended by Border Patrol. However, a new analysis of what happened at U.S. borders in 2014 proves otherwise. I was very surprised by this data. According to a new data analysis by Pew Research Center, “more non-Mexicans were apprehended by the Border Patrol in 2014 than Mexicans.” In 2014, 229,000 Mexicans were detained compared to 257,000 non-Mexicans. It also showed that Mexican apprehension numbers have reached a historic low from data collected over the past 60 years. These numbers and statistics represent a dramatic change in what is happening at U.S. borders. In 2007, Mexican apprehensions were more than ten times those of non-Mexican apprehensions. In 2007, 809,000 Mexicans and just 68,000 non-Mexicans crossed the U.S. southern border. There are many theories on why these numbers have taken such a dramatic shift. One is that there has been a significant increase in illegal immigration from Central America. Another is that it has to do with the unusually high number of unaccompanied minors who came across the border in 2014. Most of these minors were from countries such as Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. What do you think caused this shift in numbers? Do you think it is a good or bad thing?
