New Robocop: been avoiding it because the original is one of my top movies of ALL time. And my first impression is in the acting. Gary Oldman -his performance is worse than an average bad actor. Samuel L Jackson is unconvincing at best. Michael Keaton doesnt disappoint, solid. He makes every scene hes in; its like he doesnt know hes supposed to get worse with age. (Hes not... But theres a subtle defiance against the changes of age, whereas Oldmans and Jacksons come off as concession acting). Ive always automatically believed an actors relationship to his/her craft to age like Scotch; but watching Oldman and Jackson, Im inclined to think rye whiskey. Then again, its Robocop, without all the awesomeness that is the Story of Robocop. Also, Joel Kinnaman is so far competent. In fact, the way he hangs his head lower and lower after his first facechat with his wife (she only sees his face), in some disappointed shame in his appearance and lack of personal autonomy(or just realized hes an actor in this flick), wouldve been more moving, had his whole body been in the shot she sees, and (& this cannot be overstated) had Peter effing Weller not been Alex Murphy. Honorable Mention goes to Jackie Earle Haley. He was the scene-stealer in the original Bad News Bears, and he made the Rorschach character in the movie of The Watchmen, become a more important character to me in rereading the comic. He also steals scenes from Oldman. So there it is. More too-long posting about Robocop to come.
