Nigeria: Researcher Wants FG to Use Churches, Mosques in Creating Policy Awareness 14/06/2011 08:42:00 // Religion Email to a friend Print version Plain text 0 Comments Article Rating:0 | Read: 294 Google + Daily Champion (Lagos) 14 June 2011 A research fellow, Mr Sunday Alonge, has urged the Federal Government to use faith-based organisations (FBOs) in sensitising the masses about its policy implementation. Alonge, a researcher with the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research said in Ibadan that FBOs such as churches and mosques could also supervise, monitor and evaluate programmes to eliminate waste and corruption in government. Because of the closeness of FBOs to the grassroots, they can play the role of giving feedback to government on implementation challenges, progress and outcomes. The research fellow said his study of 35 Nigerian FBOs with other researchers showed that the organisations could be useful in setting up accountability committees at the local level. According to him, this will make political office holders more accountable to the electorate. Alonge noted that FBOs could mount advocacy at different levels of governance if well utilised as well as act as agents for providing services at the grassroots. He said his study of FBOs involvement in policy process showed that the organisations believed the grassroots had been neglected for too long concerning the governments policy implementation process. The research fellow expressed the belief that FBOs could be harnessed to influence development outcomes if they were drawn into the policy making process.
