Not a day goes by that I dont see something on my news feed that reads, She talked behind my back! or Rumor spreaders are gonna get theirs! even I know what you said, you need to stop saying stuff!. Well folks, let me tell you that people who go behind your back and talk about you are destructive people who act out for attention. I often wonder why the greatest temptation known to man is the joy of negatively talking about someone in order to gain some sort of acceptance, because really thats what it is. Need for acceptance. Have you ever had someone come to you and say, Hey! Did you know that (Insert any name here) in trouble? Did you hear it was because of (insert anything here)? And while you sit and listen you think, I wonder if this is really true. I wonder if I should think better of this. The answer, you probably should. Most rumors arent true. It doesnt seem to matter, however. There is always a person who will read a Facebook post and infer whatever their heart desires and go back to the person they THINK its about and tell them their own version of the story. Im shaking my head as I type this, we are grown-ups. Rather than hide behind social media, email and our cellphones, maybe we look each other in the eye, consider what they have been through or are going through, and think to ourselves, hmmm, she seems to be hurting, maybe I should pray for her. - that answer is always a yes. Heres my Mindyisms for today as to why people talk behind your back, backbiters, or moles: 1) Without the person spoken about being around, it eliminates the conflict that would occur by them defending themselves of the charges. 2) The pain and hurt caused by negative charges are not visibly seen in the face of the one being spoken about. 3)The one making the negative claim is trying to gain a friend by tearing down the reputation and character of another. 4) Elevating ones self by lowering others 5) Greedy personal gain There are other reasons why someone would choose to do this; all of which serve no positive purpose. If we look into the life of Jesus we can see that He was not one to talk behind someone’s back. He certainly had much to say and some things were quite negative. But let us never loose sight of the fact that when Jesus spoke a negative word about someone, it was truthful (which most times makes the comment hurt so badly), and it was said directly to the person in effort that it would make a difference and that person might change in their ways, (Mat. 12:25-30; 38-45; 23:1-36). Romans 1:28-30 reads, “And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them” God does not look kindly upon the behavior of “backbiting”. He puts it in a class with all other forms of evil doings which are unnatural to godliness. Let us do our best to always seek out the good in people. If we focus in that area, we will find ourselves with much less desire to share the shortcomings and weaknesses behind the backs of people, and much more desirous and effective in the Lord’s work. We must always keep in mind that we all have shortcomings and weaknesses, and it is no fun having them exploited in conversation when we are not around. Prayer for Today: Father, help me to keep my mouth closed. Help me to not look to others for backbiters, for they are attention seekers and I dont want to hear their words, I only want to hear your words. Thank you Jesus for Calvary, Amen.
