Not everything needs prayer to work. (Warning: This post might be disturbing to the young at faith) In Malawi there is an unhealthy obsession to prayer. In fact, the reason why very little is achieved in Malawi, is because the majority of the people think prayer is the magic wand that replaces thinking and action. Here are my sober observations: 1. People in Malawi will pray for rains to grow crops. And if the rains dont come or are insufficient, they will face hunger. People in Israel will use their God-given wisdom, knowledge and skills to grow crops through irrigation. So far, I have NEVER heard of hunger in Israel, at least not in the past 3 decades. 2. People in Malawi will pray for a financial breakthrough to get money to pay for school fees for their children. People in Europe open an education fund account for their children the moment they are born and save some money every month until such a time the child grows up and is ready for college. 3. In Malawi people pray for Gods intervention to take care of their large families of between 4 and 9 children. In Europe, couples decide to have just 2 or 3 children and properly take care of them. Usually, they will not have children unless they have stable incomes and a house. 4. In Malawi people pray for leaders to govern the country well. In Europe, they have created systems that create checks and balances for those they elect into leadership. For example, a Prime Minister in Britain cannot lie to the nation about where he hires a private jet. There are systems that will clearly guide such issues of national importance. Governance issues are not resolved through prayer. 5. In Malawi, people pray for special favour to get employed. In America, when presidential candidates are being scrutinized, they check what policies they will put in place to ensure jobs are preserved and created. They have systems where each quarter, they publish information on how many jobs have been created, and what is the level of unemployment. By the way, did you know that Christianity came to Malawi from Britain? It looks to me that probably the early missionaries did not teach us the entire truth about the relationship between prayer and thinking, planning, leadership and hardwork. (...to be continued)
