Not only are fruits and vegetables healthy, they can also directly assist with weight loss. Vegetables are high-volume foods i.e. they make you ‘feel full’ quicker than meat, poultry and dairy products do. That is why a vegetarian diet makes you eat less (and not because vegetables are less tasty than meat!). What’s more, they are not high in calories. Hence, the weight-loss benefit. Vegetables and fruits are also packed with nutrients that meat cannot give you, thereby not starving the body of certain types of nutrients. This explains why vegetarians, who eat a more well-rounded diet than meat-eaters, do not suffer food cravings. Vegetables contain vitamins, minerals, enzymes, fiber, antioxidants and protein needed for good health and avoidance of disease. According to research, the average American diet consists of only 8 percent fruits and vegetables. The problem is that the remaining 92 percent of the diet consists of nutritionally empty processed foods, low-carb and low-fat notwithstanding. This only fuels food cravings. Also, you do not have to turn vegetarian to lose weight. Fruits and vegetables need to form the bulk of your diet, with meat and poultry eaten in small amounts and not necessarily with every meal.
