OFFICIAL BOYKIN ART STUDIO ANNOUNCEMENT: Thrilled to be working on my next portrait series! Entitled Shameless, I am exploring masks, shame, vulnerability, and how we show and hide ourselves from others. Shame creates distance, walls and guards. It disconnects us from ourselves, our loved ones and our environment. Isolation breeds isolation and over time it becomes a habit seeping into every relationship and leaving destruction in its wake. With this series, I plan to immerse myself in public shame as a way to beat this beast and force myself to reconnect to my imperfect-and-thats-okay human nature. Each portrait will expose something about myself that Id rather the viewer not know about me because it reveals hidden fears, trauma, or negative character traits. My theory is that I think I can release some or all of my personal shame by giving it illustration and therefore a voice. Shame thrives in silence. When that silence is broken, it gives others around me a chance to say, Me too thus vanquishing that isolation and reconnecting me to the strength in my vulnerability. I am especially excited to be working with the talented photographer Christina A LeMarr and the skilled leatherworker/mask maker Devin Deschenes on this collaboration. Both of these artists will be contributing to my portraits but also exhibiting additional work related to this project when it opens in Fall 2015.
