OK I sent of DNA samples to 2 different ancestry companies; the first one (on top) traces genes going back 10-50 generations or 300-500 years - this very roughly tracks migration patterns. The one on the bottom matches ones DNA with the DNA of current inhabitants. Since my known ancestors came from eastern Slovakia/western Ukraine the map on the right fits well. Its the map on the top with the top ten ethnic matches that is interesting - there are actually no Slavic genes at all - mostly central Asian such as Turkic tribes. I know there were continuous invasions of Eastern Europe from the east but this raises the question for me: if I am a modern-day Slav but have no Slavic genes, what are Slavs anyway? Also the American Indian and Latino genes are thought to represent migration from the same region: Central Asia/Russia - this is the area it is believed the Native American tribes originated so when genetic testing is conducted Native Americans share a heavy genetic heritage with Central Asians such as Turkic peoples. And if Slavs from Eastern Europe heavily carry those same genes they can look genetically similar to Native Americans - its as if the migrations from Eastern Europe brought these genes full circle. Thoughts?
