OK Red Wing comrades and comradettes; should I amend and send? Our programs are the meal ticket for the school, failures in our facility look bad in the educational world and tarnish a great reputation…. An open letter to MNSCU and Minnesota legislators. Dear Friends- I am a returning student at SE Technical in the world- reknowned Lutherie program, and I am writing today to address a few concerns about this fine program and indeed all of your instrumental programs. The recent failures of the humidifiers in our guitar labs have brought to the forward the issues of diminishing funding and overburdened infrastructure in the program and the hobbling of a world-class training program. The Faculty who are charged with running these programs are doing a magnificent job with what they have, the key phrase being ‘what they have’... I truly understand the economic climate and the grim reality of legislative priorities but to let our fine programs suffer from these kinds of catastrophic failures of infrastructure will do great damage to the regard this institution is held in by the community. The music community is still mourning the loss of the Electronic Instrument and Accordion programs. Throughout my professional musical life my repair persons all came from Red Wing, I came here with their encouragement and blessing , confident I was going to receive the best, and I think I have within the limits that have been imposed on my instructors this semester. They cannot do their jobs properly in classrooms with KNOWN defective equipment that has to be limped along in hopes of getting through another year or whatever. The students are not getting the informational value these instructors are able to pass on to us, which is what we pay for. I strongly urge you all to consider your funding priorities and make sure all of these programs are maintained at a level where they can fulfill their promise, lest that promise be empty...
