Obviously computer science is not the only domain where a significant number of experts are just writing crap, it also applies to electricity specialists. Case in point: When trying to plan for how much power you need for a off-grid electric installation (battery bank, solar panels, inverters capacity, ...) you are supposed to evaluate the consumption of your appliances. Apparently when its about fridges, most sites and equipment sellers are assuming that fridges can consume up to twice the amount of power when the compressor start, only few articles (forums, blogs, ...) state that it can be up to more than ten times the average power. I checked with an amp/watt meter: My small fridge uses between 50 and 62 Watts when running, but when the engine starts theres a peak power of about 600 Watts. The conclusion is: Measure things yourself instead of just assuming that the common knowledge is correct, specially if it involves buying expensive and delicate hardware :)
