Official threat article by Zach Harris. Last Saturday, I had the opportunity to sit down with the former number 1 and number 2 high school football players in the state of Wisconsin from 2008, Steve Morris and Deon McClain, both of whom had signed with the Racine Threat that day. Throughout the interview, I would ask them questions regarding their feelings about signing with the team, what they hope to achieve there, etc. By the time the interview was over, they both had eerily similar answers to each question I had asked. For instance, I asked how they felt about having the possibility of sharing the same backfield together, to which they both replied: “It’s kind of like playing on an all-star team. You have all these other guys on the same squad that all play great football, and know what it’s like to play for a championship-caliber team, and to have those kinds of teammates playing together on the same field makes you feel like your chances of winning are just that much higher.” I then asked if they had missed their old high school playing days at all, to which Deon replied: “It’s always best not to reflect on the past. What’s done is done. It’s time to move forward and show everyone that you’re a different person, like a new breed of player that’s ready to dominate any opponent and take on any kind of challenge.” Steve agreed, and would go on to say that it was good knowing that he was back home playing for his city’s home team. Like it was a great feeling to be giving back to the fans and being ready to show them what he’s made of. Deon felt the same way, and added that he felt they were both ready to give 110 percent every day that they could, whether it was at practice or in-game, to show they could handle any team that stood in the way of a championship. I even asked Steve what it was like playing for the University of UW-Whitewater as a wide receiver on a team that won three out of the last four NCAA Division III national championships. He said “that every game was exciting” and that he “got so used to winning there, I never wanted to have the thought of losing ever again”. It sounds like he came to the right place when he decided on signing with the Threat. I finished the interview by asking how high their expectations were for this upcoming season. There was no doubt that both Steve and Deon had two things on their mind: Win another championship, and don’t ever look back. -
