Ok dog friends, please try to keep this friendly. Let me start by saying this is NOT something Im considering for either of my boys. I just saw a post about it in a group and it sparked my interest again :) So! The issue- training pets (note I said pets, please no discussions about SDs being trained in this field) in protection work? My understanding is this type of training takes advance obedience to see whole new level. Also helps with strengthening the bond between dog and handler. Now yes obviously only certain dogs (not breeds, dogs) cant make it through this kind of training. As with all things there are morons out there who just seek to use this method for their own selfish, pathetic and misguided needs. On a whole though, its not all about the actual damage your dog can do to another person. More so its meant to be about bonding, strengthening training and keeping both your dogs mind and your mind more active and focused? Yes one could argue that you could get the same effect with free style dancing, adgility, water sports, scenting games etc. Each to their own though. I guess it is something you have to question. Why train in protection work and have your dog classed as a weapon in most countries when you could instead train in something far less controversial. .. So how naive am I being? After seeing this discussion in a group, I contacted the professional protection working dog trainer who tells me its his opinion that all larger dogs trained in personal protection should wear a muzzle whenever in public or around children. This just gives me the feeling that this trainer doesnt have faith in his own methods..? Yes better to be safe than sorry. I make sure point now to train my dogs to accept and enjoy muzzles, just incase there is ever an emergency and one is needed. Still better to actually educate yourself on the why and do your best to make sure to keep up on the latest information about understanding bite prevention, understanding dogs body language so you can learn about the warning signs. Most importantly and finally though, knowing and trusting yourself, your chosen dog trainer and of course your dog!
