Ok, some news came through last week and many of us missed or did - TopicsExpress

Ok, some news came through last week and many of us missed or did not realize that it would directly affect us. The German economy contracted (this was a shock and unexpected) and the French economy stagnated. Russia is Putin on the Ritz of militarization, the EU and the US are sanctioning them and Russia is sanctioning back. If Germany sanctions too much, Russia can turn down or turn of the gas spigot to Germany who depends on Russia for 30% of its energy. Meanwhile in Iraq, a terrorist group, ISIS, who are so brutal even Al Qaeda says they are too extreme, is spreading chaos and despair. Thank God that in the past few days, the Israel-Hamas conflict has toned down slightly. What does all this mean to us musicians? It means the world economy is going to jam its foot down on the brakes. This means, that we need to work our buns off, earn as much as we can in the next 6 months, save and resist any temptation to buy an expensive luxury item or a home that has too huge a mortgage payment. Save as much as we can and start spending less and less because come January if not before, we will need it. If you are in a gig that is boring but pays a regular income and are thinking of quitting, because you think you want to find yourself musically, DONT QUIT. If a qualified musician or actor in New York can wait tables to pay the bills while waiting for an ideal artist gig, we sure as hell can hang in there in the so-called boring music gig. Find other ways to neutralize the boredom of a mundane gig like work on writing new tunes, improve your technique and increase your musical input by listening to more great music. But whatever you do, HANG ON TO YOUR GIG. I hope and pray I am wrong, but the data and many financial sector professionals I trust have advised me to practice as much prudence as I can. If this advice is wrong, well, then you will have more savings than you planned on. Nothing wrong with that.
