On 16 May 1943, No. 617 Squadron carried out Operation Chastise against targets in the Ruhr Valley, Germany. A significant number of Australians took part in the raid, including four pilots. Pictured here, Flight Lieutenant David John Shannon (later Squadron Leader, DSO, DFC and Bar), was just 20 years old and already a decorated veteran. Of the 19 Lancaster bombers that set out, only 11 returned. Their story was told in the book “The Dam Busters” by Paul Brickhill, a Melbourne-born Australian fighter pilot and author.
