On December 13, 2012, at a Florence School District One Board meeting, Mrs. Pat Gibson-Hye Moore suggested that the former Byrnes School be named Alfred Rush, since the Byrnes School must be named eventually. Mr. Odom and Mr. Dorriety expressed a favorable opinion of Mrs. Gibson-Hye Moore’s suggestion. Mr. McIver stated that while he has no problem with the name of Alfred Rush, he would remind the members that there are other African-Americans who could be considered. After much discussion, Mrs. Gibson-Hye Moore agreed that her suggestion was indeed a motion to name the new site John W. Moore and Alfred Rush (the name which is consistent with the historic marker in Florence County) would be the name of the former Byrnes site. Elder Pipkins seconded the motion. The motion carried by unanimous vote.
