On March 31: 1967: A Friday: Took local bus from North Johnson City to Johnson City, TN. Went to a barber shop and got a haircut. Took bus back to motel. My father and I then went by car up US 23. We stopped for lunch in Jenkins, KY. The Coke they served was mostly ice; my father coined the term Coke Jenkins for such a drink. We went on to Pikeville, KY, and stayed at the Landmark Motel. 1974: A Sunday: Left St. Johns, NL. Had to drive all the way to Port aux Basques; 565 mi/900 km; to catch the ferry on which I had reservations. Made a brief stop in South Brook-Halls Bay to visit the Fowlows with whom I had stayed during the storm on Thursday. About 25 mi/40 km short of Port aux Basques, I ran into a severe snow squall and get stuck. Some people helped push me out. At Port aux Basques, at the agricultural inspection station, all cars had to be washed to prevent Newfoundland soil from being taken to the mainland (it contained some type of pest). My car would not start when it was my turn. The automatic choke stuck. I went to open the butterfly valve and the lid to the carbeurator was blown away by the wind. I was able to get it, but the wing nut was lost. Somebody there found a square nut that would fit and hold the lid in place. After car was washed, I drove it onto the ferry, which was the Ambrose Shea, the same ship I had taken to Newfoundland. I went to the small cabin I had reserved along with passage and went to sleep.
